The Tarapur nuclear power plant had
long gone past its intended life cycle and the
agreement to supply fuel to the plant was more of
symbolic than real long-term value. The joint
statement, however, went far beyond fuel supply to
providing India access to the whole range of civilian
nuclear plants, material and technology.
Asked about the commercial benefits
to the U.S. from the deal, the officials said the
American nuclear industry was not geared for immediate
exports but there was undoubtedly a commercial
interest over the long term.
The French nuclear industry could
be an immediate supplier of equipment and technology.
As regards fuel, the U.S. supplies
would be much cheaper than the French.
