India loses her auto dispute at WTO

As part of her policy for steady self-reliance through local manufacture , India has been insisting that all foreign collaborations must be subject to a progressive local manufacturing program. This well-though out policy has now been rejected by WTO Dispute Settlement Body based on complaints by US and EU. It is hoped that India will represent the case again, at least for items where there is adequate internal market. Providing IPR protection without insisting on local manufacture could destroy the very foundations of our cherished goal of self reliance. Additional problems to be taken into account (if there is no concurrent/progressive local manufacture) would be also the ones related to IPR's and the rules on country of origin.
