India must fight other 'basumati' patent claims.



 
 

 

According to Prof E.A.Siddiq of Directorate of Rice Research (ICAR), India should contest the grant of patent on three varieties of 'basumati' to RiceTec Inc. also with the help of experts . Incidentally IARI has become the first country to develop a hybrid strain of basumati rice.Known as Pusa Rice Hybrid-10 (RH-10), the variety has been released for commercial seed production and would hit the farmer's fields in the 2002 khariff sowing season, according to Dr Panjab Singh, Director / IARI.
