US Panel rejects plea on American Basmati Sales.

The US Federal Trade Commission has rejected the request to prevent US-grown rice from being advertised or represented using the words ‘ basmati’ and ‘ jasmine’. Under the US Department of Agriculture regulations, basmati and jasmine are included as examples of 'aromatic rough rice' and are not limited to rice grown in any particular country .It is claimed that the sale is only as ‘ the American basmati rice’. It is not known whether the Government of India has yet IPR protected our basumati variety under the TRIPS compliant ‘ geographic indications’ category.
