US pharma companies manage 3 to 5 patents a year and the to ones firm up
on the average 10. The Hyderabad based Dr Reddy Research Foundation could
file 20 , with an investment of $ 10 million, reported Dr A.Venkateswarlu,
Technical Advisor/DRF, in a seminar recently held at Hyderabad. According
to him DRF has so far obtained 22 US patents since 1993, the total R&D
investment being Rs 112 crores. According to him the average amount spent
by an MNC for bringing a new drug molecule into the market is estimated
at $ 500 million. Dr Venkateswarlu believes that in India this can be done
within $ 50-100 million.
Other majors such as Lupin, Pfizer, Shasun , etc also have serious plans to increase their R&D efforts to take advantage of the newly emerging situation. |
